Make-up Hobbes Week 3

One of the ideas that I found interesting when considering Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes is representation. The representation in monarchy is related to tennis partners. In a monarchy the king can not be at all places at all times, so he must have representatives to fill in the gaps. However, representation is an unstable concept because men are greedy and will take advantage of the system if given power to do so. This made me think about the representation that exists in our own government. A few of our representatives are senators, governors, and the state legislator. Unlike a monarchy, the masses do have a say in who is elected to represent them, but that does not mean that power will not corrupt these men and women. Just recently, the state of Texas had a state senate vote on the banning of the state lottery. The vote went against the lottery about 75 to 65 and the senators took a break for lunch. After lunch the senate decided to take a revote, and the outcome was reversed, this time about 90 to 50 in favor of the lottery. The reason that this issue was being considered is because the lottery is a system that prays on the poor, much like car title loans. I do not know if there was any bribery or foul play involved in this massive change in voting, but I think it is important to always be cautious of ones government.
