Make-up Caleb Williams Week 15

Today in class we discussed the correlation between the circuit justice system and the set up of power in Caleb Williams. Falkland is in complete control during the court scene with Caleb, but not because of any amount of evidence or truth in his words. The only reason that he has control is because of the power set up in that society. The judge, crowd, Falkland are all acting in unison because they must protect the character of Falkland in order to protect their power over the lower class. Falkland or any wealthy man can make any accusation and have the upper hand in a court case that is based solely on their word versus the defendant. Using this power, the upper class can show clemency to the lower class during court cases and earn loyalty, or show that they can destroy them at any time. Kings in a monarchy also used this tactic in order to earn the favor of his people by showing a merciful side of his rule. This is seen in Moll Flanders earlier in the semester when she is not given the death penalty and instead sent abroad for reformation. This is the beginning of the prison reform movement in England, which Godwin is very much in favor. Also when thinking about this section it is important to remember Falklands view on Alexander the Great. Falkland views Alexander as an overall good person, even though he murdered many. In Falklands eyes Alexander did what was necessary to achieve his greatness and showed mercy when he needed to. In this way Falkland is justifying his own murderous past.
