Hey everyone,
I am so dizzy and confused right now. I actually just got back from the clinic and picking up my medicine. At the clinic they said I have a 101.1 fever, and the flu. Unfortunately I do not know if I will be able to make it to class Wednesday, because the doctor said it should take 5-10 days to get over, and I do not want to get you guys sick. I feel very sick and may not meet the word requirement this week, but I will try my best! Anyways, on to my post this week.
In Moll Flanders, Moll or (Mrs.Betty) is a very attractive young woman, and theres nothing unordinary about that. The thing I find unordinary is that Moll's two brothers (from her adopted family) are in love with her. Even though they are not blood related, it still seems like an episode of Jerry Springer to me. She gets seduced by the elder brother (I can't seem to find his name in the text, so maybe he is just called the elder brother). She believes that they should get married, until his brother Robert ask her to marry him. "... his younger Brother, of who I have made some mention in the beginning of the Story, falls to work with me; and he finding me alone in the Garden one evening, begins a Story of the same Kind to me, made good honest Professions of being in Love with me; and in short, proposes fairly and Honourably to Marry me... " (25).Again I am shocked by what happens next. Instead of the elder brother getting mad, he tell her to marry Robert. I am sure he has a reason for this, but why do that. Why not fight for the girl you love, even though it is kind of weird she is your "sister".
I found this hard to read, so hopefully I can make it back to class for the discussion.
The problem here is the elder brother (who doesn't get a name because he's a buttface) doesn't love Moll. He thinks she's hot and an easy lay, and he isn't wrong.
ReplyDeleteAs for them being siblings, she wasn't really adopted, merely taken into the house as a ward/servant/paid best biffle, and she was taken in at an age where familial bonds are already formed so she was more like...a stay at home love interest than an actual sister.
I hope you're feeling better Donny!
ReplyDeleteThe way I see their relationship, however, is that the older brother simply saw it as a convenience. Here was a pretty, young girl who lives in his house, and has been known to be pretty naive (she thought a Madam was something worth aspiring to). He just took advantage of the situation, especially considering their differing social status. Worst case scenario for his is that they're found out and he's chastised while Moll gets kicked out, not much of a risk there. He doesn't really love her, just loves what.... their relationship was and what he got from it. Basically I agree with Jeremy.
